Free Electricity Scheme: Cut Electricity Bills to Zero with PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Skyrocketing electricity bills are now ruining the common man’s kitchen budget. In such a situation, if you get up to 300 units of free electricity every month along with a huge subsidy, it is nothing less than a golden dream. The central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched with this vision, encouraging you to install solar panels on your roof.
Under this scheme, the government aims to connect 10 million homes with solar energy so that people can generate their own electricity and earn additional income by selling electricity to the grid. By 2026, the subsidy rules and application process have been simplified, making it very affordable for middle-class families to install solar systems.

How will ₹78,000 be credited to your account

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

The biggest feature of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana is its transparent subsidy structure. The government has clarified that a large portion of the initial investment will be borne directly from the government treasury. This amount is transferred directly to your bank account through DBT.
If you choose a 3-kilowatt (kW) solar system for a typical middle-class family, the total assistance you will receive will be as follows: ₹60,000 will be provided for the first 2 kilowatts at a rate of ₹30,000 per kilowatt. After this, an additional ₹18,000 will be provided for the third kilowatt. Thus, by installing a 3-kilowatt system, you will receive a total subsidy of ₹78,000, which significantly reduces the initial cost of installing the panels.

Essential Requirements for Application

To avail the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, it is mandatory to follow certain important rules. The government has clarified that this scheme is only for residential buildings; subsidies will not be applicable for commercial use.

Required Documents

Government schemes often face delays due to paperwork, so prepare your file in advance. When applying, you’ll need a bank account linked to your Aadhaar card, the latest electricity bill, proof of roof ownership, and a cancelled check. Providing accurate and precise information expedites the approval process from the Discom and ensures the timely disbursement of the subsidy.

How to Register on the Portal

To avail the benefits of the scheme, you don’t need to visit any office; the entire process is online. First, create your consumer login on the official PM Surya Ghar portal. After completing your profile, apply for ‘Rooftop Solar’ and wait for approval from your local electricity department (Discom).
Once approved, choose one of the registered vendors listed on the portal and have the solar system installed on your roof. After installation is complete, the net metering process will take place. Finally, the subsidy amount will be directly credited to your bank account after verification of the details submitted by you.
