Why are refunds delayed?
Reports indicate that some refund claims have been red-flagged due to high-value or deduction claims. The department is analyzing these cases and, if necessary, may advise taxpayers to file revised returns. In such a situation, the income tax refund is processed only after the ITR is e-verified. According to the website, after e-verification, the refund is usually credited to the account within four to five weeks.
Reasons for Refund Delays
The most common reasons include bank account errors. If your bank account number or IFSC code is incorrect, the money will not be credited directly to your account. Furthermore, if the PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked or there are errors in the name or date of birth, refunds may be delayed.
Sometimes, claiming incorrect deductions or credits in the ITR can also result in a refund being withheld. For example, if you have overstated your deductions under Section 80C and the department becomes suspicious, the money will be withheld until the correct documents are received. Furthermore, refunds can also be delayed if the information provided in the form does not match the records in Form 26AS or AIS.
