Excellent news for train travelers! If you have a change in your travel plans, no need to cancel your ticket. The Railway Ministry is going to start a new facility, which will give passengers the option of changing their travel date of their confirmed train tickets on the internet, free of penalties of cancelling their ticket. The service will be operational in January of 2026. The Railway Minister said the purpose is to develop the convenience of travel for passengers.

Under the System passengers will be able to, through internet access, change their confirmed tickets to a different date of travel. There would be no need to cancel and reserve a new ticket, provided you can find available seats for the new travel date. If the fare is higher, the passengers pay the difference. If the fare is equal or lower, there would be no price difference caused to chanting the fare price from the original ticket fare price, or fares above current or lower fares price. There will be no initiation of the rescheduling process if there are no available seats on the new travel date for current travel ticket date.

What is the current system?

Right now, if a passenger wants to change travel plans, they must cancel the ticket and book a new one. A cancellation charge is taken for this. If you cancel 48 to 12 hours before the train leaves, 25% of the ticket amount is cut. If you cancel less than 12 hours before departure, 50% is cut.

With the new system, these charges will be removed. Passengers can change their travel dates without losing any money.

This new rule will help those who travel often or whose plans change suddenly. The Railways want to make travel easy and smooth through better digital services.

When will this facility start?

According to the Railway Board, this service will begin in January 2026. More details about the rules and process will be given on the IRCTC and Railway Ministry websites soon.

How will it work?

  • Passengers must log in to the IRCTC website or app.
  • Choose the ‘Reschedule Journey Date’ option.
  • Pick a new date and train.
  • If seats are available, the reschedule will happen instantly.
  • If the new fare is higher, only the difference must be paid.

This new step supports the Digital India Mission. Passengers will be free from the trouble of ticket cancellation, refund delays, and money cuts. The Railways aim to make train travel as smart and easy as air travel.
