Indian Railways Revises Counter Ticket Cancellation Rules, Know before travelling

Indian Railways: If you frequently travel by train and often cancel tickets, this is very important news for you. Indian Railways has made significant changes to the rules related to ticket cancellation. Specifically, the rules for canceling tickets at the counter have been significantly altered. This change occurred only last week, but will be implemented starting April 1, 2026. Therefore, it is very important for you to know the new rules.

Relief in counter ticket cancellation

The Railways has simplified counter ticket cancellation. Previously, passengers had to cancel tickets at the originating station. Now, passengers can cancel tickets at the counter at any station.

Refunds on cancellations at different times

Under the new rules, refunds are now based on the cancellation time. If you cancel your ticket between 8 hours and 24 hours before departure, you will receive a 50% refund, subject to a minimum charge. If you cancel between 72 hours and 24 hours before departure, you will receive a 25% refund. If the ticket is canceled within 72 hours, you will receive a maximum refund of approximately 75%, minus a minimum flat cancellation charge. Most importantly, if you cancel a confirmed ticket less than 8 hours before departure, you will not receive a refund.

No need for TDR on e-tickets

The Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) process has now been completely eliminated for e-tickets. Passengers will no longer need to submit a separate application and will receive their refund automatically.

Strictness in Tatkal booking system

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that new steps have been taken to prevent irregularities in Tatkal ticket booking. An Aadhaar-based OTP system has been implemented, bookings will be restricted for the first 30 minutes, and an anti-bot system has been installed to prevent fraudulent users. Furthermore, more than 30 million suspicious user IDs have been blocked.

Changed chart preparation time

The Railways has also changed the timing of chart preparation. Charts will now be prepared 9 to 18 hours in advance, instead of the previous 4 hours, giving passengers enough time to make alternative plans.

Facility in travel class upgrade

Now, passengers with counter tickets can upgrade their travel class up to 30 minutes before the train’s departure. Earlier, this facility was available only till chart preparation.

Changing boarding station made easy

Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train’s scheduled departure time. Previously, this change was only possible before chart preparation. This feature will be especially useful for passengers traveling to major cities. According to the Railway Ministry, all these new rules will be implemented in a phased manner between April 1 and April 15, 2026.
