Through this scheme, needy families are provided financial assistance so that they can meet the necessary expenses related to their daughters’ marriages.

What is the Kanya Vivah Yojana?

The Kanya Vivah Yojana is a social welfare scheme of the Odisha government aimed at providing financial assistance for the marriages of daughters from poor families. Through this scheme, the government wants to ensure that the burden of the daughter’s marriage does not fall on the father or the family. The state had previously implemented the Subhadra Yojana, and after its success, the government has launched this scheme.

How much financial assistance is provided?

Under this scheme, eligible families receive a total assistance amount of Rs 51,000. This amount has been determined keeping in mind various needs. Rs 6,000 is provided for the wedding arrangements. In addition, Rs 10,000 is given for essential items such as sarees, anklets, bindis, utensils, and toe rings. The remaining Rs 35,000 is provided as direct financial assistance so that the family can cover other wedding-related expenses.

What is the government’s objective?

The government says that the objective of this scheme is not just to provide financial assistance. Preventing child marriage, spreading awareness against the dowry system, and ensuring marriage registration are also among the government’s main objectives. The government wants daughters to be married at the legal age and to bring about positive changes in society.

The government’s target for the scheme

The Odisha government has set a target of spending approximately Rs 60 crore on this scheme over the next five years. According to government sources, this scheme will provide relief to hundreds of families who are unable to marry off their daughters due to financial constraints. In many cases, marriages break down due to a lack of money, and this scheme can prove helpful in preventing such situations.

The benefits of the Kanya Vivah Yojana (Girl’s Marriage Scheme) are available only to families living below the poverty line. The girl must be at least 18 years old. The benefits of the scheme are provided only after the marriage is registered. The scheme also includes provisions for the remarriage of women, helping needy women to start a new life.
