Electricity Price Hike: Another major shock for common people. Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh are about to encounter another challenge. After receiving some relief in March, they will now feel the pinch again in April. This news raises concerns for millions of consumers in the state, as electricity bills are expected to rise once more.
What is causing the price hike?
Beginning in April, electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh will experience an increase in the fuel surcharge. This time, it has been raised by 2.14 percent, which translates to an additional burden of around Rs 142 crore for millions of consumers in the state.
As per the order from the Power Corporation, the fuel surcharge for January 2026 will now be included in the April bills. This indicates that the relief enjoyed in March is now coming to an end.
The relief from March has turned into a setback. Awadhesh Kumar Verma, President of the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council and a member of the State Advisory Committee, noted that the fuel surcharge was reduced by 2.42 percent in March. At that time, the public benefited from approximately Rs 141 crore in relief, but by April, this relief has disappeared. The council argues that the constant fluctuations in surcharges are upsetting the budgets of ordinary citizens.
There is a surplus of crores, so why the need for recovery?
The Consumer Council has raised significant concerns regarding this recovery strategy. They assert that the state’s power companies already owe consumers a surplus exceeding 51,000 crore rupees. Avdhesh Verma argues that it is entirely unjust to impose a monthly surcharge on consumers when the companies already possess such a substantial amount of money.
Demand for transparency in formula
The council has demanded that the Electricity Regulatory Commission investigate this entire formula. They allege that the power corporation’s billing and surcharge calculations lack transparency and are not in the best interests of consumers. The council says it will continue its fight against this “unnecessary financial burden.”
Overall, electricity bills are expected to rise in April. It remains to be seen whether any relief will be provided or whether consumers will have to pay more once again.
