EPFO Update: The central government is considering giving a big gift to provident fund (PF) employees. A major benefit may be extended to EPFO and the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). The government may take several important decisions, including increasing the salary limit. Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, has also hinted at this, bringing smiles to the faces of PF employees.
During this time, he said that the Ministry of Labour and Employment may soon decide on increasing the salary limit under EPFO and ESIC, fixing minimum wages, and increasing the minimum pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme 1995. Mandaviya said that these issues were raised in recent meetings with the central government.

Decisions will be taken in the interest of workers in the coming days. Currently, the EPFO salary limit is ₹15,000 per month. This limit may be increased to ₹21,000 for ESIC.
What is the minimum EPS amount?
The central government may also increase the minimum amount of the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). Currently, the minimum pension amount for EPS is ₹1,000 per month. If the government increases the limit, most salaried employees will come under its purview.
What did the Supreme Court say?
In January, the Supreme Court made a significant statement while hearing a petition. The Supreme Court directed the central government to take a concrete decision on revising the salary limit in the EPF scheme within four months. This limit has not been changed for the past 11 years.

The bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar gave this order on a petition filed by social activist Naveen Prakash Nautiyal. Therefore, the central government may issue surprising orders regarding EPFO members within the next three months.
What was the petitioner’s argument?
The petitioner’s lawyers presented their arguments before the Supreme Court judges. Lawyers Pranav Sachdeva and Neha Rathi argued before the court that, despite the minimum salary being higher than this limit in many parts of the country, there has been no change in the EPF salary limit. This situation is also depriving a large number of employees of social security and provident fund benefits. The petition argues that the revision of the wage ceiling over the past 70 years has been done in a very arbitrary manner, sometimes with gaps of 13 to 14 years.
How much interest can be earned?
The central government mayfinalisee the interest rate for EPFO members for the financial years 2025 and 2026. This time, there is a possibility of a 0.25 per cent reduction compared to last year, meaning an interest rate of 8 per cent. If this happens, it will be a blow for provident fund contributors.
