If you also have a PF account, then there is some very important news for you. The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has once again extended the deadline for activating the Universal Account Number (UAN) and linking the bank account with Aadhaar. Now employees have a chance to complete this important process by June 30, 2025.
Earlier its last date was 31 May 2025. EPFO has recently issued an official circular giving this information, which has given additional time to those lakhs of employees who have not been able to complete this process till now. Why is it necessary to do this work, and what can be the loss if not done, let us understand in detail.
What is the EDLI scheme and why is the UAN-Aadhaar link necessary
EPFO’s Employee Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme provides life insurance protection to PF account holders. Under this scheme, if an employee dies during the job, his nominee is given a lump sum insurance amount of up to ₹ 7 lakh.

This amount provides financial assistance to the family of the deceased and becomes a big support for them. To avail of this scheme, the employee must activate his UAN number and link it to Aadhaar. If this work is not done, then in an unfortunate situation the family may be deprived of this benefit.
Why UAN activation is significant
It is extremely essential to have an active UAN to claim the benefits of EPFO services such as EPF Withdrawal, Pension (EPS), and EDLI Insurance.
With an active UAN, the employee’s identity is correctly updated in the EPFO records. This ensures that all information related to your PF account is accurate and verified.
The entire process is now digital, eliminating the need for paperwork and frequent visits to offices.
Not having an active UAN can lead to numerous problems in withdrawing PF or availing of other facilities in the future. Such problems can be avoided by activating it on time.
With an active UAN, you can easily check your PF balance, view claim status, and update KYC details.
Who should activate the UAN number immediately
Employees whose Aadhaar number is not yet linked to UAN, or whose UAN is not yet activated, must complete this process immediately. This is a mandatory task for all those who want to make full use of all the benefits associated with their PF.
If your employer has added you to the EPFO scheme but has not activated your UAN, then the employee should activate it themselves. Do not rely on the employer, your financial security is in your hands!
Easy process to activate UAN

Employees can activate their UAN number by visiting the official website of EPFO and following these easy steps:
First of all, visit the EPFO unified portal website https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
On the homepage, you will find the option of “Activate UAN” under the ‘Important Links’ or ‘Employee Services’ section. Click on it.
A new page will open where you have to enter your UAN (if you have one), name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, and mobile number correctly.
You will receive a Time Password (OTP) on your mobile number. Verify that OTP by entering it in the designated place.
After verification, you will get the option to set a new username and password for your UAN. Keep these safe for future logins.
After completing all the steps, your UAN will be activated.
