UIDAI is preparing to launch a new QR code-enabled e-Aadhaar system that will remove the need to carry or submit physical photocopies of Aadhaar for identity verification. This digital upgrade is expected to be implemented across the country by the end of 2025.
The new Aadhaar update app will allow users to change most of their personal details from home. So far, nearly 2,000 of the 1 lakh existing machines have been upgraded to the new system, according to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar in a statement to the Times of India.
Aadhaar Updates to Get Easier from November
From the upcoming November, Aadhaar holders will only need to visit enrolment centres for biometric verification like fingerprint and iris scans. This step by UIDAI will make the process easier, reduce paperwork, cut the risk of identity fraud, and speed up updates.
UIDAI will now take user details directly from government databases such as birth certificates, driving licences, passports, PAN cards, ration cards (PDS), and MNREGA records. Talks are also going on to add electricity bill records to make address verification even easier.
Biometric Updates for Children and Secure Verification
UIDAI is also working on biometric updates for children. It is planning enrolment drives with education boards like CBSE for students. These updates are required at the ages of 5–7 years and again between 15–17 years.
The new system will also help stop the use of fake documents in registrations and property deals. The QR code-based verification system is now being tested in sub-registrar offices and the hotel industry as a safe way to confirm identity. It is being designed with a strong focus on privacy, ensuring personal details are shared only with the person’s permission.
