DA, Salary Hike: There is a good news for WB state govt employees. The upcoming days could offer considerable relief to countless government workers and pensioners in West Bengal. A significant decision regarding dearness allowance (DA) and the 7th Pay Commission is anticipated from the state government during a cabinet meeting scheduled for May 18th. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has suggested that the meeting will earnestly address the long-standing requests of the employees.
Notably, state employees have been advocating for a DA that matches that of the central government, and this issue is currently under review by the Supreme Court. As a result, the expectations of employees from the new government have notably increased.
In a conversation with reporters, the Chief Minister mentioned that the previous cabinet meeting only permitted decisions on finalized files, but the upcoming meeting will tackle several significant policy matters. These will encompass issues such as crimes against women, institutional corruption, the RG tax case, and most importantly, the DA and 7th Pay Commission topics. He clearly pointed out that the government might contemplate granting employees and pensioners a dearness allowance equivalent to that of the central government. Should this occur, it would provide substantial financial relief to millions of state employees and retirees.
Indeed, for several years, government employees in West Bengal have expressed dissatisfaction over the considerable disparity between central and state government salaries. While employees of the central government have regularly received increased DA, West Bengal employees argue that their allowances are significantly lower. This situation has sparked numerous protests and demonstrations. Now, with the new government in power, employees are optimistic that their salaries and allowances will experience significant enhancements.
Moreover, the conversation surrounding the establishment of the 7th Pay Commission is deemed vital. If the government opts to create the commission, it could lead to major adjustments in the basic salaries, allowances, and pensions of state employees. This could boost employees’ earnings and have a positive effect on the state’s economy.
However, experts believe this could also impose an additional financial burden of thousands of crores of rupees on the government.Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also stated that senior ministers Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul would brief the media on the decisions after the next cabinet meeting. Currently, government employees and pensioners across the state are keeping an eye on the May 18th meeting, as major announcements regarding DA and the 7th Pay Commission are expected on that day.
