Over the years, Indian Railways has developed and changed some of the rules to provide passengers more facilities during a journey. In this column, we will discuss about a major change, which is going to work in favour of the passengers.

Indian Railways is introducing a major change to improve passenger convenience. This change will make it easier to change the travel date of a confirmed ticket, eliminating the need for cancellation charges. This means that if your plans suddenly change and you are unable to travel on the scheduled date, you can still do so.

Confirmed Ticket Date Change Option

So now, the same ticket can be used for travel on a future date. Previously, passengers had to cancel their tickets and rebook for a new date. This involved a cancellation charge and no guarantee of a confirmed seat. This new railway change will eliminate this problem, providing relief to millions of passengers.

How to activate this feature

According to media report, passengers will be able to change the date of their confirmed tickets online. If you need to change your travel date for any reason, you can reschedule your ticket online. However, there’s no guarantee you’ll receive a confirmed ticket instead. This will depend on availability. Furthermore, if the new ticket is more expensive, you’ll have to pay an additional amount. This feature will be especially beneficial for those who suddenly change their travel plans, thus wasting time and money canceling tickets.

Now, the general public may soon have a new facility to change their travel date. This will allow them to change the journey date of confirmed e-tickets directly online. This facility is expected to be available to the public from January 2026. However, you will only be able to change your ticket if the train has available tickets for an alternate day, otherwise, you will have to cancel the ticket.

Currently, passengers do not have the option to change the travel date on their tickets. Everyone must cancel their tickets, which also requires them to pay a cancellation fee. Currently, cancellation fees for AC First Class or Executive Class tickets are ₹240 + GST, for AC 2 Tier tickets, ₹200 + GST, for AC 3 Tier, AC Chair Car, and AC 3 Economy tickets, ₹180 + GST. Sleeper Class tickets are charged ₹120 and Second Class tickets are charged ₹60.
