Air India Flight Cancelled: Major update for Air travellers. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is leading to considerable losses for Air India. In a letter addressed to employees, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson detailed how the US-Iran war is affecting the airline. Wilson noted that since the onset of the war, 2,500 flights have been cancelled. At present, the situation is so severe that the airline can only manage to operate 30% of its usual Middle East schedule. Many countries have either completely closed their airspace and airports or declared them extremely hazardous, resulting in flight suspensions.
The repercussions of the war extend beyond the Middle East. Air India flights heading to the UK, Europe, and North America are now compelled to take longer routes to steer clear of unsafe airspace. Wilson mentioned that jet fuel prices have surged, doubling in the spot market. These longer routes have not only led to increased fuel consumption but have also significantly lengthened travel times. The most substantial financial impact is anticipated to hit the company’s balance sheet starting next month.
Like other Indian airlines, Air India has started to implement a fuel surcharge on new tickets. However, Wilson recognized that not all passengers are inclined to pay higher fares, which sets a limit on how much fares can be increased. The CEO also pointed out that due to economic uncertainty, both passengers and companies might not travel as frequently as they did before. Some may choose to delay their travel plans for now. Several airlines globally have already begun to cut flights in response to soaring fuel prices.
Wilson suggested that Air India might also need to make decisions based on the evolving situation. Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope. Certain cities in Europe and North America are experiencing a rise in demand, prompting the airline to add more flights to those destinations.
