Achal Khare, a project official, mentioned that this machine will mark a pivotal point for the entire initiative. Notably, it will be utilized to create a 7-kilometer tunnel beneath the sea.
The tunnel boring machine, with a diameter of 13.65 meters, is not just any machine; it is a state-of-the-art TBM. This is the first instance of such a large, mixed-shield tunnel boring machine being employed in India, which is why it has been dubbed a “Mahamachan.” Transporting this enormous machine to the site will require over 150 trailers, and it is expected to take around 90 days to assemble completely.

Work is set to commence in the first week of July. According to the schedule, this machine will start its operations in the first week of July. Its key advantages include safety and accuracy. Unlike traditional tunneling methods that pose risks, the TBM operates safely and without the use of explosives. This technology is particularly beneficial in densely populated regions and for underwater projects.
This TBM machine is capable of performing several functions at once, such as excavation, debris clearance, and concrete reinforcement. The tunnel, which will be constructed under Thane Creek and through hilly areas, demands sophisticated engineering, which this machine is equipped to handle.
