Number of Union Budget Presentations

Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai has broken the record for presenting the budget the most times. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai presented the Union Budget 10 times. Morarji Desai presented the budget 10 times as Finance Minister in the Congress government. Morarji Desai is number one in terms of presenting the budget.

P Chidambaram’s name comes at number two. He has made a record of presenting the budget 9 times. Former President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Union Budget 8 times. But, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the Union Budget for the maximum number of times, i.e. 7 consecutive times.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget for the eighth time on February 1, 2025. C.D. Deshmukh presented the budget a total of seven times. Before assuming the post of Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister of India, during which he presented five Union Budgets and greatly influenced the country’s economic policy.

The first budget of independent India was presented on November 26, 1947, by the then Finance Minister RK Shanmukham Chetty. Before India’s independence in 1860, India’s first budget was presented by James Wilson and was prepared in English.
Until 1999, the budget was presented on the last date of February at 5 pm. This tradition was changed to 11 am by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. After this, the date of presenting the budget was changed to February 1 in the year 2017, at that time Arun Jaitley was the Finance Minister.
