Bank Holiday: Big news for bank account holders. If you’re considering a visit to the bank this weekend, checking the holiday schedule beforehand can help you steer clear of any inconveniences. In certain regions of India, banks will be closed over the weekend. One of these closures is for Rabindra Jayanti, and the other is the usual Sunday holiday.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already declared six bank holidays for this month, which include all Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays, and specific sector-related occasions.

Where will banks be closed on Saturday, May 9?

The weekend might turn into an extended holiday for bank staff in Kolkata. On Saturday, May 9th, banks in Kolkata will be closed for Rabindra Jayanti, while Sunday, May 10th, is the standard weekly holiday observed nationwide. This sequence of holidays means that bank employees in the city will enjoy a two-day weekend, whereas bank branches in other parts of the country will remain open on May 9th.

Why is the Rabindra Jayanti holiday on May 9?

Rabindra Jayanti, which marks the birth anniversary of Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, is celebrated in West Bengal as ‘Pachishe Boishakh.’ Although this year the date falls on May 7 according to the Bengali calendar, the official bank holiday has been moved to May 9 to align with institutional holidays on a nearby Saturday.

When will banks be closed in May?

In May 2026, banks will be closed nationwide on Sundays: May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31. They will also be closed on May 9, the second Saturday, and Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti. Additionally, banks will be closed on May 23, the fourth Saturday.

Moreover, some dates will be specific holidays for certain states. Statehood Day will be observed in some regions on May 16th.

Banks may also be closed on May 26 due to Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti.

Banks will be closed in most states on May 27-28 in observance of Eid al-Adha.

16 May Bank Holiday

After May 9th, banks will be closed on May 16th. Banks will remain closed in only one city on May 16th, Gangtok. Banks will be closed on this day due to State Day.

Even though bank branches are closed, digital payment methods like UPI and IMPS are active for instant fund transfers. You can easily pay your credit card balance through your mobile app or net banking portal. While many banks consider the next working day after a holiday as the official payment due date, this depends entirely on your bank’s policy, so it’s best not to take the risk.

Keep these things in mind on holidays

Nowadays, most automated clearing house systems, such as NACH, operate on all days, including Saturdays and Sundays. This means your loan EMI could still be deducted from your account. Therefore, maintain a sufficient balance in your bank account to avoid bounce charges or any penalties. If a payment fails, credit card companies typically offer a three-day grace period on interest.
