A passport is an essential document for international travel. Without it, you cannot apply for a visa or travel abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs issues passports, and you can apply for one both online and offline. If you want to get a passport, here is a list of the required documents you need to submit.
1. Proof of Identity
You need a valid identity proof to apply for a passport. The commonly accepted documents include:
- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Voter ID Card
- Driving License
2. Proof of Address
- You must provide proof. Accepted documents are:
- Aadhaar Card (if it has your address)
- Bank Passbook
- Water or Electricity Bill
- Voter ID Card
- Landline or Postpaid Mobile Bill
- Proof of Gas Connection
- Employer Certificate
3. Proof of Date of Birth
To verify your age, you need to provide one of the following:
- Birth Certificate
- School Leaving Certificate
- Driving License
- PAN Card
- Voter ID Card
4. Documents for Name Change (Marriage, Divorce, or Separation)
If you want to change your name due to marriage, divorce, or separation, these documents are required:
- Marriage: Marriage certificate or a joint photograph announcement
- Divorce: Divorce decree or court order
- Spouse’s Death: Death certificate
5. Documents for Your Children
If you’re applying for a passport for your children, additional documents from parents are required:
- Parent’s Passport
- Parent’s Address Proof
6. ECR/ECNR Status
When applying for a passport, you may need to specify your ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) status.
- ECR Status: Will be marked on the passport.
- ECNR Status: No special mention on the passport.
