Farmer ID: The government is gearing up to simplify fertilizer sales. They might introduce a digital Farmer ID to make the fertilizer sales process smoother. This is the same digital Farmer ID that new farmers use to sign up for the PM Kisan Yojana. In some states, having a Farmer ID is a must to get the benefits of the PM Kisan Yojana. The government is quickly working on a Kisan ID, which is a special ID for farmers to make sure that the benefits from the scheme go to the right people.
Could the burden of the urea subsidy go up?
Sources have mentioned that the government is rolling out this initiative as a pilot project. This move could help in managing the currently high fertilizer subsidy. The government’s budget has estimated the fertilizer subsidy spending at Rs 1.68 trillion, which might go beyond Rs 1.91 trillion. The main reason for the higher spending compared to the budget estimates is the record urea consumption in FY26, which has already hit 31.15 million tonnes (mt) from April to December 2025, about 4 percent more than the same time in 2024.
Officials noted that the Union agriculture ministry discussed the idea of gradually linking urea sales with the agri stack during a meeting with state government representatives last month, starting with a pilot project in selected districts. In the first phase, pilot projects will take place in seven districts where a good number of farmer IDs have already been set up. During this phase, farmer IDs will be used to ensure that fertilizer is sold only to landowners, cultivators, or those authorized by them.
How to create a farmer ID?
To create a Kisan ID, simply register online through your state portal (like PM-KISAN or Agri Stack), provide Aadhaar for eKYC, enter farm details including land survey number, give consent for data usage, e-sign, and submit to get an Enrolment ID to track approval. After verification, the ID will be generated to avail benefits of government schemes. You can also get a Farmer ID by visiting a CSC. If you prefer to create one yourself, you can register through your state’s portal or the Farmer Registry app.
