Aadhaar Card Update: In India, the Aadhaar card has become an essential component of every citizen’s identity. It is necessary for various purposes, such as banking, obtaining mobile SIM cards, accessing government schemes, and making digital payments. Meanwhile, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an important update. Individuals with Aadhaar cards that are 10 years old and have not been updated are now required to refresh their documents. Not completing this process promptly could affect many crucial services.
What is the new rule?
As per UIDAI regulations, citizens who have not updated their Aadhaar card in the past 10 years must now resubmit their Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). This measure is intended to ensure that Aadhaar data remains accurate and current. You can easily check the date of issue located at the bottom left of your Aadhaar card to see when it was issued. If it dates back to 2016 or earlier, it is vital to update it without delay.
Free service until June 14, 2026
UIDAI has established a deadline of June 14, 2026, for Aadhaar updates. During this timeframe, online updates are entirely free, allowing as many individuals as possible to take advantage of this service. If you update after this date, a fee may apply. However, visiting an Aadhaar service center will still incur a charge of ₹50. Therefore, updating online from the comfort of your home is regarded as the simplest and most economical choice.
Update in simple steps
To update your Aadhaar, start by visiting the My Aadhaar portal. Log in using your Aadhaar number and registered mobile number with an OTP. Next, choose the “Document Update” option and verify your details. After that, upload your POI and POA documents, which can include your PAN card, voter ID, passport, electricity bill, or bank passbook. The file should be in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format and must be less than 2MB in size. Once submitted, you will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) that can be used to monitor the status of your update.
