Aadhaar Card: Big news revealed about Aadhaar Card. The Assam government has taken a major decision regarding Aadhaar cards. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that new Aadhaar cards will no longer be issued to people over the age of 18 in the state.

The government stated that this move is aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining Aadhaar cards. This decision was made during a meeting of the Assam Cabinet. However, the process of obtaining Aadhaar cards for children under the age of 18 will continue as before.

Who will qualify for the discount?

The Chief Minister announced that Aadhaar cards will be distributed to Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and tea plantation communities until March 2027. After this date, individuals from these groups who are over 18 will no longer be eligible for new Aadhaar cards. The government believes that Aadhaar card coverage in the state is nearly complete, leading to a more thorough review of new applications.

What will occur in exceptional situations?

Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that if someone over 18 requires an Aadhaar card for a specific reason, the district commissioner must present a proposal to the state government. The government will then assess the situation to determine the individual’s eligibility. This indicates that the process for issuing Aadhaar cards will now be more rigorous than in the past.

Emphasis on curbing illegal immigration

The Chief Minister noted that in some districts, the number of Aadhaar cards issued has surpassed 100 percent. Consequently, the government aims to investigate who has received extra Aadhaar cards. He emphasized that the government wants to ensure that no illegal Bangladeshi citizens can acquire Aadhaar cards. This is the reason behind the implementation of this new regulation.

The Chief Minister confirmed that this rule will be fully enforced starting April 1, 2027. After this date, no new Aadhaar cards will be issued to anyone over 18. The state government has previously indicated its intention to tighten the regulations surrounding Aadhaar card issuance. The government asserts that this measure is designed to prevent illegal immigration into the state and to enhance the identification system.
