Bank Holiday: If you plan to take care of important banking matters on Monday, November 9, this update is essential. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official holiday calendar lists bank closures in several states on that day.

In observance of Diwali, Lakshmi Pujan and Govardhan Puja, the RBI has designated November 9 as a bank holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Why has the RBI declared a holiday on Monday?

The Reserve Bank of India groups bank holidays into three categories: the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and account-closing holidays.

Banks will be closed on November 9 for Diwali (Lakshmi Pujan), Govardhan Puja and Vishwakarma Day, which are observed across the country. However, RBI rules do not apply these holidays uniformly nationwide; closures depend on festivals observed in each state.

In which states and cities will banks remain closed?

Banking operations will be suspended on Monday, November 9, 2026, in the following states and city circles:

Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Kanpur)

Rajasthan (Jaipur)

Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal)

Chandigarh

Tripura (Agartala)

Sikkim (Gangtok)

Manipur (Imphal)

Note: Regular banking services may be available on November 9 in Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), West Bengal (Kolkata) and the southern states. Alternatively, holidays may be scheduled there for November 10 and 11 for Bali Pratipada and Bhai Dooj.

Which services will remain operational even on holidays?

Despite bank branch closures, customers will experience no disruptions to digital banking services. All of the following services will continue to function as normal:

UPI services: Fund transfers through PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and bank UPI apps will continue without interruption.

Internet and Mobile Banking: Fund transfer (IMPS, NEFT, RTGS) through NetBanking and Mobile Banking will continue.

ATM services: Cash withdrawal and cash deposit machines (CDMs) will function as usual.

Branch services closed: Physical operations like cheque clearance, passbook update, counter cash withdrawal and new account opening will remain closed on Monday.
