River Indie Scooter: A dramatic turn of events in India’s electric vehicle space has left everyone surprised. While Ola’s EV sales have faltered, a relatively new Bengaluru startup is quickly making waves. River Mobility’s sole offering, the Indie electric scooter, is now witnessing record-breaking sales, courtesy of its innovative design and useful features that are making waves everywhere.

Sales Growth and Customer Response

River Mobility’s trajectory took a steep upcurve in January 2025 when the Indie scooter broke through the 600 monthly units barrier for the first time. Growth has been consistent and robust since then. In fact, total sales till date in 2025 have already surpassed the full 2024 figures by 77%. With cumulative sales crossing the 7,000 units benchmark, River Indie is making its presence felt in the niche EV market.

More interesting is the indirect advantage it’s gaining from Ola’s decreasing popularity. With customers seeking out alternatives, they are increasingly turning to the Indie, amazed by its solid build and convenient use-case on daily commutes.

Manufacturing Capacity and Expansion

River Mobility began manufacturing the Indie scooter at its Karnataka-based Hoskote facility on 25 August 2023. This 1.20 lakh sq. ft. factory has automated lines for vehicle assembly and battery packs, making it a whopping annual production capacity of 1 lakh units.

Though 2024 witnessed relatively sluggish demand, the situation changed when a new model was unveiled. In October 2024, the monthly sales reached 370 units—the year’s highest. The launch of the newer model considerably improved retail performance, and the sales line has only increased after that.

New Model Introduction and Upgrades

November 2024 saw the arrival of a new version of Indie with a chain final drive system, the first in its segment. The upgrade was to make it last longer and reduce ownership costs. Although the new one is pricier at an ex-showroom price of Rs.1.43 lakh compared to the base car, the customers are said to value the extra money spent.

Battery, Range and Motor Performance

Indie comes with a 4kWh battery pack with an IDC range of 161 km on a single charge. The motor of the scooter provides a peak power output of 6.7kW and torque of 26 Nm, which makes it well-equipped for city riding in terms of performance.

Design and Utility Features

One of the most notable aspects of the Indie is its storage volume. With an overall capacity of 55 litres of lockable space, it features a 12-litre glovebox and 43 litres under the seat—the maximum in India’s e-scooter category. The product is also equipped with 14-inch wheels at both ends, front footpegs, and accommodates three ride modes—Eco, Ride, and Rush—making it practical for various commute requirements.

Retail Network and Future Plans

At present, River Indie can be accessed in metropolitans such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Hubli, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Coimbatore, Vellore, Tirupati, and Mysuru. The firm has expansion plans to Trivandrum, Vijayawada, and Pune in the near future. River Mobility targets to have its presence in more than 100 Indian cities by 2026 through company-owned stores and partnerships.
