In the last few years, the craze for CNG vehicles has greatly increased in India. The biggest reason for this is great mileage and low cost. Maruti Suzuki has always been the leader in this segment, Maruti dominates the sale of CNG cars. But now shocking news is coming out that Maruti may soon discontinue the CNG model of its popular compact SUV Grand Vitara. If you are also a fan of the CNG model of Grand Vitara, then this news may disappoint you.

Is the car going to be discontinued

Maruti Suzuki has removed the CNG variant of the compact SUV Grand Vitara from its NEXA website. This has led to speculations that the company may soon discontinue this model. However, no official announcement has been made at the moment. Maruti launched the factory-fitted CNG variant of the Grand Vitara a few years ago. The special thing was that it was the first CNG car in the compact segment. In such a situation, the discontinuation of this model may come as a surprise to many.

Did people not like Grand Vitara CNG

Maruti may have taken this decision due to the low sales of the CNG variant of Grand Vitara. However, we do not have exact information about how many units of the CNG model of Grand Vitara have been sold so far. However, the reaction of the people shows that they did not like the factory-fitted CNG kit in Grand Vitara. There can be many reasons for this. Perhaps the lack of power or drop in performance did not suit people.

Lack felt on the highway

The CNG variant of Grand Vitara was available with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, which generated 102 Bhp of power and 137 Nm of peak torque. When running on CNG, this engine produced 87 Bhp of power and 121.5 Nm of torque. This power may be sufficient for driving in the city, but on the highway, this power was not that sufficient for a mid-size SUV, somewhere the lack of power was felt. This may be the reason why people did not like this variant much.

Not popular in the fleet segment either

The highest demand for CNG models comes from the fleet segment, which buys CNG cars for cabs. This is the reason why there is such a tremendous demand for CNG in models like Dzire, WagonR, and Swift. Grand Vitara or any mid-size SUV was probably not a popular choice in the fleet segment due to its cost. Apart from this, Maruti did not launch the tour version of Grand Vitara like the models mentioned above. This may also have affected its sales.

Maruti is bringing e-Vitara

Maruti Suzuki is going to launch the electric version of Vitara soon. At the time of its launch in India during Auto Expo 2025, Maruti Suzuki gave only basic information about its first battery electric vehicle e-Vitara. The range, weight, and performance figures of the electric SUV have been revealed. The e-Vitara will be exported to global markets from India, with production starting at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in May. The e-Vitara is also expected to be launched in India in May, although the carmaker has yet to release any official statement. Now it remains to be seen how much of a splash the electric Vitara makes in the Indian market.
