maruti Dzire: Though SUVs are on top, sedans are still going strong. In May 2025, a total of 31,106 units of sedans were sold in India. Though this is a decrease of 0.45% compared to last year’s May, it is still a 6.79% increase from April and reflects a renewed interest in this sector. Among them all, one car took center stage for its incomparable value and fuel efficiency.

Dzire Leads the Pack

Maruti Suzuki Dzire was the best-selling sedan in May 2025 with a whopping 18,084 units sold. That’s a 12.60% increase over May 2024. The new 5-star safety rating by Bharat NCAP has raised confidence levels among buyers sky-high. With affordability and safety being major concerns in the market today, Dzire continues to hit the sweet spot.

Aura Continues to Impress

Hyundai Aura settled into the second position with 5,225 units sold, registering a healthy 17.87% growth year on year. Compared to April 2025, its sales also rose by 23.70%. This subcompact sedan remains popular with customers seeking a feature-filled but affordable car.

Amaze Faces Headwinds

Honda Amaze also saw a minor decline in performance. It recorded 1,998 unit sales with a 9.80% YoY drop. Month-over-month, its numbers also fell marginally, indicating purchasers are gravitating towards more value-for-money alternatives.

Virtus Sees Stable Growth

Volkswagen Virtus reported consistent performance with 1,707 units retailed in May. It saw a 6.02% increase year on year and a 6.36% growth from April. The vehicle appears to appeal to niche customers seeking a combination of style and performance.

Mixed Performance from Rivals

Tata Tigor, its EV variant included, sold 1,076 units but registered a significant 48.71% fall over last year. Skoda Slavia also fell 39.08% from last May, while Hyundai Verna fell by 32.66%, even though its facelift has happened recently. These numbers indicate that design overhaul alone might not be sufficient to maintain market share.

City and Ciaz Lose Ground

Honda City experienced an enormous 53.42% year-on-year decline, selling only 491 units. While marginally improved over April, it’s evident that this erstwhile top seller sedan is failing to keep up. Maruti Ciaz, at 458 units sold, dropped 37.26% on an annual basis but recorded a 42.68% increase over April, reflecting modest recovery.

Premium Models Show Small Gains

Toyota Camry, a premium segment sedan, sold 198 units in May 2025—a 62.30% rise compared to last year. Skoda Superb was at the lowest with only two units sold, demonstrating the limited appeal of premium sedans in the current value-focused market.

What This Trend Tells Us

Buyers in the sedan market are increasingly prioritising mileage, safety, and affordability. Dzire and Aura’s dominance shows that compact sedans still hold strong appeal. In contrast, premium sedans like City and Verna are losing ground, perhaps due to high pricing and the growing value-for-money mindset. Even EV sedans like Tigor are struggling to gain consistent traction, suggesting that buyers remain cautious about electric options in this segment.
