Delhi has been very strict with end-of-life cars. From July 1, 2025, there have been stringent rules imposed to prevent old diesel and petrol cars from plying on the roads. Your old car can be confiscated if it’s caught at a petrol pump, and you could be asked to shell out a huge fine.

Strict Rules for Over-Age Vehicles

Thereafter, diesel cars more than ten years and petrol cars more than fifteen years cannot operate on Delhi roads. These cars will not be permitted to be refuelled at petrol pumps. The Delhi government initiated this from 1st July 2025. Officials have added that any such cars plying on the roads will be impounded, and a strong action will be taken.

First Day Sees 80 Vehicles Seized

News reports indicated that on the inaugural day of this campaign, 98 over-age vehicles were captured on camera, and 80 vehicles were confiscated. 45 vehicles were confiscated by the Transport Department, 34 by Delhi Police, and one by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Police officials reported that during the first few hours of the campaign, 24 vehicles were confiscated from 6 am to 1 pm.

Heavy Fine for Old Vehicles

Any over-age vehicle found being fueled at a petrol pump will be seized on the spot. The owners will also be fined. Four-wheeler owners will be charged ₹10,000, and two-wheeler owners will be charged ₹5,000. This also includes towing and parking fees. Owners will also be required to give an undertaking that they will not drive or park the vehicle anywhere in public and will relocate it outside Delhi.

Vehicles to be Dispatched to Scrapping

Enforcement squads will keep on inspecting daily. The impounded vehicles will be dispatched to approved scrapping facilities (RVSF). Owners should obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) within a year from the date of reaching end-of-life stage by their vehicle if they wish to shift their vehicle outside of Delhi.

New Rules to arrive at NCR Districts

Although these strict regulations began in Delhi on July 1, from November 1, they will apply in five NCR districts—Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Sonipat. Petrol stations in these locations will receive automatic number plate reader (ANPR) cameras by October end to trap over-age vehicles attempting to fill up.
