August Bank Holidays: Big news for bank customers. Halfway through August, if you have any essential banking tasks to complete in the remaining days of the month, this information is crucial for you. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official calendar, banks across various states will be closed for seven days between August 16th and August 31st, which means out of the remaining 15 days of the month, you should plan accordingly.
This closure includes the Sunday right after Independence Day, the fourth Saturday, and significant festivals like Janmashtami and Onam. Make sure to review this list before visiting the bank to save yourself some time.
When will banks be closed during the rest of August?
According to the RBI’s official guidelines, here are the details of the major holidays and Saturdays/Sundays in the second half of August:
August 16: Sunday – Weekly holiday nationwide.
August 22: Fourth Saturday – Holiday for all government and private banks.
August 23: Sunday – Weekly holiday nationwide.

August 28: First Onam – Banks will be closed in Kerala.
August 29: Thiruvonam – Banks will be closed in Kerala.
August 30: Sunday – Weekly holiday nationwide.
August 31: Sri Krishna Janmashtami / Avani Avittam – observed in many states including UP, MP, Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
Onam is a festival celebrated exclusively in Kerala, so banks in the rest of the country will operate normally on those days. August 22nd, being the fourth Saturday of the month, will see banks closed across the nation.
Online banking and digital services will still be available
Even though bank branches will be closed, customers won’t experience major inconveniences. Digital and online banking services, including net banking, mobile applications, and UPI, will be available 24/7. ATMs and cash deposit machines (CDMs) will remain accessible for cash withdrawals and deposits. If you need to handle large cash transactions or drafts, please ensure to do so on the working day before or after the holiday.
