Ration Card Update:- Big news has emerged for ration card holders: the system for collecting rations has changed. You may have experienced situations where fingerprint authentication fails at the ration shop—due to issues like unclear fingerprints or technical glitches—causing significant inconvenience. If you have faced this problem, here is some welcome news. To make the ration distribution system simpler and more transparent, the government introduced a face authentication facility starting October 1st.

The official announcement was made on September 29th, and the system is now operational. If your fingerprint fails to match, verification can now be done via facial recognition, allowing you to collect your rations easily without any hassle.

Please note that this new system was implemented on October 1, 2026. Its primary objective is to streamline the ration distribution process for individuals whose fingerprints cannot be registered by the machine due to technical errors or other reasons. This facility is available at ration shops that have completed the necessary technical system updates.

How to do the face verification process for ration card holders’ work?

Until now, collecting rations required verification by placing your thumb or finger on an e-POS machine; however, this process often failed due to network issues, technical glitches, or unclear fingerprints.

Biometric verification will still be conducted on the e-POS machine as before.
If the fingerprint does not match, you can opt for face authentication.
The beneficiary’s face will be scanned using the camera integrated into the e-POS machine.
The identity will be verified against the information stored in the Aadhaar database.
Once verification is complete, the beneficiary will receive their rations.

Relief Likely for the Elderly and Manual Labourers

The elderly and those engaged in continuous manual labour often face issues with fingerprint matching, as machines frequently struggle to read their fingerprints accurately. In such cases, face authentication can provide an alternative method of identification for these beneficiaries. However, this facility can only be used where the e-PDS system and the corresponding e-POS machines are set up to support it.

What is e-PDS?

The Electronic Public Distribution System (e-PDS) is a digital framework for the distribution of rations. It digitally manages information regarding ration cardholders and beneficiaries. This system also conducts various processes related to ration distribution and identity verification. The introduction of face authentication aims to further streamline this process.

To implement this system, the government is undertaking necessary technical modifications and software updates for the e-POS machines and their core systems used in ration shops across the country. However, in the initial phase, this facility will only be available where the e-POS machines have been equipped with cameras and the technology update has been successfully deployed.
