Atal Pension Yojana: Big news for Atal Pension Yojana investors. The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government initiative designed to provide monthly pensions to individuals as they age. This program was specifically created for those who are poor, low-income earners, and individuals working in the unorganized sector. People aged between 18 and 40 are eligible to enroll, although certain criteria must be met.
Recently, an awareness campaign about APY was launched in the Thane district of Maharashtra. The Bank of Maharashtra, along with the State Level Bankers Committee and the Public Financial Institutions (PFRDA), informed the public about the advantages of joining the scheme. Officials highlighted that APY can alleviate financial concerns for individuals in their later years. Let’s discuss how to open an account and the pension amount you can expect after turning 60.
How to open an APY account?
You can set up an Atal Pension Yojana account at your bank or post office. If you have a savings account linked to your Aadhaar, you can enroll in APY using that account.
If you do not have a bank or post office account, you will need to create a new account and complete the Aadhaar KYC process. Once that is done, you can apply for APY.
How much pension will you receive after 60 years?
With APY, you must decide in advance the amount of pension you wish to receive in your old age. The scheme offers guaranteed minimum monthly pension options of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, Rs 4,000, or Rs 5,000. The pension amount you receive will depend on your age and the contributions you make to the scheme. This means that the sooner you join, the easier it will be to select a pension option based on your contributions.
How to apply for APY online?
If your bank provides APY registration through net banking, you can apply from the comfort of your home. Simply look for the APY option on your bank’s website or net banking portal and fill in the necessary details. After that, you can enable the auto-debit feature, which will automatically withdraw a specified amount from your bank account at regular intervals.
What is the mode of offline application?
To apply offline, you’ll need to visit your bank or post office. Obtain the APY form and fill in the required information. Submit a copy of your Aadhaar card and the required KYC documents. Upon submitting the form, the bank will issue you a receipt. You may also receive a message on your registered mobile number upon approval.
The APY term typically lasts until the age of 60. After reaching 60, pension payments begin from the accumulated balance, as per the scheme’s rules. To receive the pension, you must submit a request to your bank or post office. Once the process is complete, the pension will be paid monthly. Upon the subscriber’s death, the spouse can receive the pension, as per the rules.
Can you withdraw money before 60 years of age?
Yes, but premature withdrawal is not generally available. This is only possible under certain circumstances, such as the subscriber’s death or the need for funds to treat a serious illness. If an APY account is closed before the age of 60, the contributions and interest earned on them are generally paid back. The government co-contribution and interest earned on those contributions are not available. Therefore, it is important to understand the rules before joining APY, and if possible, it may be beneficial to continue the scheme until the age of 60.
