Amul had reduced the prices of 700 products after the GST was reduced
Amul had reduced the prices of 700 dairy products after the GST rate reduction in September 2025. GST on dairy products was reduced from 12% to 5%. At that time, the price of a one-liter carton of ghee dropped from Rs 650 to Rs 610. A five-liter tin dropped from Rs 3,275 to Rs 3,075. The price of a 100-gram pack of butter dropped from Rs 62 to Rs 58. A 500-gram pack dropped from Rs 305 to Rs 285.
Amul Cow Ghee shortage in Gujarat
Along with the price hike, people are also facing difficulties in getting some Amul dairy products. Shopkeepers in Vadodara and Ahmedabad reported that ghee stocks are running low. The availability of cow ghee has been affected due to increased demand after the Ganesh festival.
On Tuesday, a D-Mart outlet in Ahmedabad’s Satellite area was out of stock of Amul ghee and butter. This problem isn’t limited to Gujarat. Complaints of supply disruptions were also reported in Pune and Kolkata in July and September.
Demand for branded ghee increased after action against fake ghee
A cooperative leader associated with Amul said that due to the major action taken against fake ghee in Gujarat and Rajasthan, the demand for branded ghee has suddenly increased a lot.
Over the past six months, nearly 200,000 kilograms of counterfeit ghee have been seized from various areas of both states. This crackdown on counterfeit ghee has increased people’s trust in brands like Amul, and they have begun purchasing branded ghee.
He also pointed out that approximately 45% of the total ghee sold annually is consumed during the festival season alone. This is why the sudden increase in demand has put even more pressure on supply.
