The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing a surge in demand, fueled by rising fuel prices, increasing environmental concerns, and government incentives. Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, has recognized this shift and is poised to enter the EV segment in a significant way. This article dives deeper into Maruti Suzuki’s electric vehicle roadmap, exploring the three upcoming models that aim to disrupt the Indian EV landscape.

Maruti Suzuki eVX: A Strong Contender in the Mid-Size SUV Segment

Maruti Suzuki’s electric vehicle offensive commences with the much-awaited eVX. Scheduled for a launch in early 2025, the eVX is a mid-size SUV built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform. This platform offers several advantages over adapting existing internal combustion engine (ICE) platforms for electric powertrains. Dedicated EV platforms allow for better battery packaging, optimized weight distribution, and improved cabin space, resulting in a more efficient and driver-centric electric vehicle experience.

Striking a Balance: Range, Performance, and Price

While official specifications are yet to be revealed, media reports suggest the Maruti Suzuki eVX could boast an impressive driving range of 550 kilometers on a single charge. This extended range anxiety is a significant concern for potential EV buyers, and the eVX aims to address this by offering a range that can comfortably handle most daily commutes and even weekend getaways. In terms of performance, the eVX is expected to deliver a balance between spirited acceleration and energy efficiency, catering to a wide range of driving preferences.

Targeting the Sweet Spot: Competitive Pricing Strategy

The starting ex-showroom price of the Maruti Suzuki eVX is estimated to be around Rs 15 lakh. This positions the eVX competitively against established players like the Hyundai Creta EV and the upcoming Tata Curvv EV. Maruti Suzuki’s brand reputation for affordability and reliability, coupled with a competitive price tag, could be a game-changer in the mid-size electric SUV segment.

Maruti Suzuki YMC MPV: Electrifying Spacious Travel for Large Families

Looking ahead to 2026, Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce the YMC MPV, an electric vehicle specifically designed for large families. This MPV will be built upon the same platform as the eVX, leveraging the benefits of dedicated EV architecture. The YMC MPV is expected to offer a spacious 7-seater configuration, making it an ideal choice for families seeking a comfortable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Extended Range for Multi-Stop Journeys

Similar to the eVX, the YMC MPV is anticipated to come equipped with a 60 kWh battery pack, delivering a driving range of around 550 kilometers. This extended range is crucial for MPVs, as they are often used for longer journeys involving multiple stops. With a 550 km range, families can embark on road trips with fewer concerns about finding charging stations.

Catering to a Growing Market Segment

The electric MPV segment is a nascent but rapidly growing market in India. With the rising popularity of electric vehicles and the increasing preference for spacious family cars, the YMC MPV is positioned to cater to a burgeoning demand. Maruti Suzuki’s expertise in developing practical and fuel-efficient vehicles makes them well-equipped to become a leader in this emerging segment.

Maruti Suzuki eWX EV: An Affordable Option for City Commuters

While the exact launch date remains undisclosed, the Maruti Suzuki eWX EV concept unveiled in late 2023 has generated significant interest. This concept car hints at a smaller electric vehicle, potentially positioned as a more affordable offering within Maruti Suzuki’s EV portfolio. The ex-showroom price of the eWX EV is estimated to be around Rs 10 lakh, making it a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers seeking an electric vehicle for daily city commutes.

Competing in the Hatchback Arena

The Maruti Suzuki eWX EV is expected to rival established players like the MG Comet and the Tata Tiago EV in the electric hatchback segment. These hatchbacks cater to a large segment of car buyers in India, primarily those seeking a practical and economical mode of urban transportation. The eWX EV, with its potential affordability and Maruti Suzuki’s brand legacy, could become a strong contender in this highly competitive space.
