The Indian electric two-wheeler market is witnessing a surge in demand, with electric scooters leading the charge. While competition is heating up, Ola Electric has emerged as a dominant player in recent months. Let’s delve deeper into the February 2024 sales figures and analyze the performance of the leading brands.

Ola S1 Rules the Roost

Ola Electric reigns supreme in the electric scooter segment, capturing a whopping 44.25% market share in February 2024. Their S1 range of scooters, comprising the S1 Pro, S1 Air, and S1 X, spearheaded this dominance with a staggering 33,846 units sold. This translates to a remarkable 90.43% year-on-year growth compared to February 2023 and a 4.94% month-on-month growth.

Ola’s success can be attributed partly to their competitive pricing strategy. Their scooters cater to a wider audience compared to some competitors. Additionally, their aggressive expansion of service centers across India might be improving customer confidence.

TVS iQube Maintains Steady Pace

TVS Motor Company holds the second position with its iQube electric scooter, securing a 20.64% market share. They’ve maintained consistent sales, recording a respectable 1.74% YoY growth and a marginal 0.89% MoM growth. TVS sold 15,792 units in February 2024, showcasing their ability to retain a loyal customer base.

Bajaj Chetak Makes Strong Comeback

Bajaj Auto has made a significant comeback with the Chetak electric scooter. They secured the third spot with 13,620 units sold, translating to a commendable 17.80% market share. This represents a phenomenal 417.08% YoY growth, indicating a successful revival of the iconic Chetak brand in the electric scooter space. However, they did experience a slight 3.70% MoM decline, suggesting a need to maintain sales momentum.

Ather Faces Setback

Ather Energy, a pioneer in the premium electric scooter segment, witnessed a decline in sales for the first time. Their Ather 450 range saw an 8.67% YoY and 6.50% MoM decline, with 11,094 units sold. This could be due to several factors, such as a lack of product refresh or increased competition in the premium segment. However, their upcoming Ather Rizzta family scooter might change the game, attracting a new customer base.

New Entrants and Struggles

Hero MotoCorp’s Vida lineup entered the market recently and secured the fifth position. While they boast the highest YoY growth of a staggering 1,648.75%, they also hold the dubious distinction of the highest MoM decline at 34.01%. This suggests teething problems as they establish themselves in the market.

Okinawa Praise Pro, another player, witnessed a sharp decline in sales, dropping a significant 83.99% YoY and 29.78% MoM. This could be due to increased competition or product positioning concerns.

The Road Ahead: A Race for Supremacy

The Indian electric scooter market is witnessing a dynamic shift. While Ola currently enjoys a strong lead, established players like TVS and Bajaj are adapting and improving. The upcoming launches like Ather’s Rizzta family scooter and potential new entrants could further intensify the competition. Here are some key factors that will likely influence the future of this market:

  • Product Innovation: Manufacturers that continuously innovate and cater to diverse customer needs will likely gain an edge.
  • Pricing Strategies: Balancing affordability with features will be crucial in attracting a wider range of buyers.
  • Charging Infrastructure: Expansion of charging infrastructure across India will play a vital role in boosting overall electric scooter adoption.
  • Government Policies: Government incentives and subsidies can significantly influence consumer purchase decisions.
