Keep these special rules in mind

  • Black and white are not worn on this day. This is because these colours are considered taboo in Hinduism for any auspicious occasion. White is also considered inauspicious for married women. Furthermore, you should avoid wearing brown, as it is considered the colour of Rahu and Ketu.
  • However, you can wear red, yellow, green, pink, and maroon on Karva Chauth, as these are considered highly auspicious. Women observing this fast for the first time should wear their wedding attire, which is considered highly auspicious and beneficial.
  • If you are observing Karva Chauth for the first time, it begins with the Sargi. According to tradition, the mother-in-law gives her daughter-in-law items like fruits, sweets, vermicelli, and cosmetics in the Sargi before sunrise. The fast begins after consuming it, as the Sargi symbolises love and blessings. You can also observe the fast according to your family’s traditions.

Method of observing the Karva Chauth fast

1. First, take a vow to fast by eating Sargi in the morning.

2. Then, in the afternoon, worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Shiva.

3. After this, in the evening, listen to the Karva Chauth story and perform the puja.

4. When the moon rises at night, after seeing it, look at the moon through a sieve and then at your husband’s face, and break the fast by taking water from your husband’s hands.

Auspicious time and materials for worship

The auspicious time for worship is from 5:57 pm to 7:11 pm. The moonrise time is said to be 8:13 pm. To perform the Karwa Chauth Puja, you need materials like raw milk, pure ghee, curd, sweets, Ganga water, rice grains, vermilion, mehendi.

Also, comb, bindi, chunri, bangles, anklets, an earthen pot with a spout, sandalwood, honey, incense sticks, flowers, lid or lamp, cotton, camphor, wheat, turmeric, sugar powder, wooden seat, sieve, athavari (eight puris), halwa and dakshina.
