Ashirwad Yojana: Along with the central government, state governments are also running several schemes for the welfare of daughters. One such scheme is the Punjab government’s Ashirwad Yojana, under which financial assistance is provided for the marriage of daughters from poor families. The objective of this scheme is to ensure that no daughter faces difficulties in her marriage due to financial constraints. It was previously known as the Shagun Yojana, but is now called the Ashirwad Yojana.
What is the Ashirwad Yojana?

The Punjab government launched the Shagun Yojana in 1997 to assist with daughters’ marriages. At that time, families with weak financial conditions were given ₹5,100 for the marriage. Over time, the scheme was expanded, and its name was changed to Ashirwad Yojana. Currently, the government provides financial assistance of ₹51,000 under this scheme.

The Amount Increased Over Time
Initially, the benefit of this scheme was given only to families belonging to the reserved categories. Later, families below the poverty line were also included. In 2004, poor Christian families also started receiving the benefits of the scheme. The initial amount of ₹5,100 was increased to ₹6,100 in 2004. After that, it was increased to ₹15,000 in 2006, ₹21,000 in 2017, and finally to ₹51,000 in 2021.

Who can avail the benefits of the scheme?
This scheme is only for permanent residents of the state of Punjab. The family’s annual income should not exceed ₹32,790. The girl must be at least 18 years old. Interested families can apply after the wedding date is fixed or within the stipulated time limit before the marriage. This scheme applies to women belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the economically weaker sections, the widows, the divorced women, and the backward classes. What documents will be needed?
