According to railway rules, a platform ticket costing ₹10 is valid for only 2 hours. This means you can stay on the station premises or platform for a maximum of two hours from the time of purchase. After that, the ticket automatically becomes invalid.
If a person stays on the platform for more than two hours and is caught by the ticket checking staff, a fine may be imposed. Therefore, whenever you go to the station to drop off or pick up a friend or relative, remember the time you bought the ticket.

What is the fine for being caught without a platform ticket?
If a person is found inside the station without a platform ticket, a fine of at least ₹250 can be imposed. In addition, double the fare of the last train that departed or the next train arriving at the platform where the person was caught may also be charged.
