Pratibha Kiran Scholarship: The central and state governments are continuously running new schemes to empower girls through education. While the central government is working on schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child), the Madhya Pradesh government has also launched a special scholarship for economically weaker but meritorious girl students. This scheme is called the Pratibha Kiran Scholarship Scheme, which aims to encourage needy girls in urban areas to pursue higher education.

What is the Pratibha Kiran Scholarship Scheme?

This scheme is designed for girl students who are good in their studies but are unable to continue their education due to financial constraints. The Madhya Pradesh government launched this scheme in 2008. Under this scheme, students receive financial assistance for 10 months so that they can continue their studies without any interruption.

Who is eligible to benefit from the scheme?

Only girl students who are permanent residents of Madhya Pradesh and live in urban areas are eligible for this scholarship. The student must have secured at least 60% marks in the 12th class. Additionally, the student’s family must fall below the poverty line (BPL category). Girl students who meet these conditions can apply for this scheme.

How much financial assistance is provided under the scheme?

Girl students from urban areas who have scored 60% or more in the 12th class receive a total scholarship of Rs. 50,000 under this scheme. Students from the BPL category receive Rs. 5,000 per month. If a student is pursuing a medical or technical course, she receives Rs. 7,500 per month. This amount is given for 10 consecutive months. In addition, students also receive priority in hostel accommodation and a waiver of college fees.

Can other schemes also be availed?

The objective of the Pratibha Kiran scheme is to empower poor and talented girl students. Therefore, even if a female student is already receiving benefits from another government scheme, she can still apply for this scholarship. Also, if the student has passed 12th grade from a recognised private school located more than 5 kilometres away from a government school, she will still be considered eligible.
