FASTag New Update: There’s great news for vehicle owners using FASTag across the country. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to waive the mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) process for already issued FASTags. This decision was taken keeping in mind the continuous problems and increasing complaints faced by people.
Why was the KYC process introduced?

NHAI had implemented the KYC process for FASTags in the car, jeep, and van categories from February 1st. The objective was to ensure that complete and accurate details of every vehicle were available and to prevent misuse of FASTag. Under this process, it was mandatory to submit several documents related to the vehicle.

The lengthy process became a source of trouble
The KYC process was taking a long time to complete. In many cases, due to a lack of documents or technical reasons, it would take several days for the FASTag to become active. This was affecting the movement of vehicles at toll plazas and increasing public dissatisfaction.

The decision changed after complaints
People were filing complaints about FASTag-related problems with the NHAI headquarters and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. After reviewing these complaints, NHAI decided to discontinue the KYC process.

In which cases will KYC now be required?
According to the new decision, KYC will now only be required for vehicles about which NHAI or the toll operating companies receive complaints. Generally, users with already active FASTags will not have to go through this process.

Verification will be done through the vehicle database

NHAI has clarified that if the vehicle details are available in the official vehicle database, the FASTag will be allowed to be activated after verification. The previous system of verification after activation has been discontinued.
Verification will be based on the Registration Certificate (RC)

If a vehicle’s details are not found in the database, the issuing bank will have to verify the information through the registration certificate (RC) before activating the FASTag. This is an attempt to make the process more transparent and faster.
