Rail travel is used by hundreds of thousands of individual travellers every day. To improve the quality of experience for all travellers, Indian Railways has developed a number of policies to support the comfort and reduce the inconvenience associated with travelling by rail. This article can provide all rail travellers in India with key insights into some of the policies implemented by Indian Railways. One of the policies Indian Railways has developed is known as the “10 PM Rule”, and it will help improve the quality of your journey through the provision of restful and comfortable nights.

Individuals who use their phone to view social media reels or to play loud music after the hour of 10 PM can face challenges while on their trip by train. As per the 10 PM Rule of Indian Railways, all passengers are expected to maintain silence after the hour of 10 PM.

According to the new guidelines issued by Indian Railways, any form of disturbance to fellow passengers after the hour of 10 PM should not take place. The intent of the 10 PM Rule is to ensure that all rail travellers receive an adequate amount of sleep and are able to be properly rested during their journey. During the course of their long distance travel, many rail passengers rely on the opportunity to achieve rest.

Under the Railways Act, 1989 (Section 145), if someone on a train creates a disturbance by talking too loudly, making noise or otherwise annoying another passenger, they will be committing an offence.

The penalty for this will be a fine of between ₹500 and ₹1,000.

In addition to the fine, the railway will first provide the offender with a warning. This includes any activity such as being on a mobile phone after 10 r:m or watching a lot of reels. Furthermore, it is considered an offence to listen to music or watch videos via a loudspeaker without using headphones.

The Railway has stipulated that listening to music or watching videos using loudspeakers without headphones is illegal. If it is determined that this act is causing trouble for another fellow passenger, the individual who committed this act may face penalties as outlined in the railways Act (Section 145) of 1989. In fact, after 10 PM, the Railway has clearly stated that this activity should not take place.

In addition, after 10:00 PM, all lights on the train will be required to be switched off, except for the night lights. The Railway created these policies to allow passengers to get a good night’s rest. If a person fails to comply with these policies, the Railway staff will take appropriate action against that individual.
