Government Support Provides New Direction to Farmers
The Bihar Agriculture Department is offering various incentives to encourage farmers to cultivate baby corn and sweet corn. The government is providing seeds for these crops at a 75 percent subsidy, helping small and marginal farmers start cultivation without incurring high costs. Approximately 22,000 plants are planted per hectare, and harvesting begins in about 60 to 70 days. The good yield in a short time is proving to be extremely beneficial for farmers.
Cultivation Area is Continuously Expanding
This Kharif season, the area under baby corn and sweet corn cultivation has increased rapidly compared to previous years. A total of 165 hectares were sown with these crops, including 90 hectares of sweet corn and 75 hectares of baby corn. The agriculture department had set a target of 100 hectares for sweet corn and 80 hectares for baby corn this year, which farmers are rapidly adopting. The increasing demand and better profits have further boosted the enthusiasm of the farmers.

The cost of cultivation is also considerably lower than that of crops like rice and wheat. Furthermore, the growing demand from hotels, restaurants, pizza franchises, the snack industry, and food processing companies is ensuring better prices for farmers.
Doubling Income Through Value Addition
Farmers and entrepreneurs can multiply their profits by creating value-added corn-based products such as frozen packs, cut corn, canned corn, and ready-to-cook products. Processing units can be established at low cost even in small towns, transforming them into large-scale businesses. Additionally, corn leaves, silk, cobs, and other residues can be used in fodder, fertiliser, and mushroom production, ensuring that no part of the crop goes to waste.
