PM Ujjwala Scheme: Launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is designed to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically disadvantaged households. As of November 1, 2025, the initiative has facilitated over 10.33 crore LPG connections throughout India, greatly enhancing access to clean cooking fuel.

To ensure everyone has access, the government has approved an additional 2.5 million LPG connections for FY 2025–26. This will help address pending applications and further broaden LPG coverage nationwide.

Targeted subsidies to boost accessibility

To encourage ongoing LPG use among PMUY beneficiaries, the government rolled out a targeted subsidy of ₹200 per 14.2 kg cylinder in May 2022, which was later raised to ₹300 per cylinder. For FY2025–26, PMUY users can receive a subsidy of ₹300 on up to 9 refills of 14.2 kg cylinders per year (applied proportionately for 5 kg cylinders).

LPG usage and consumption trends are closely tracked through MIS reports, PPAC data, and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Independent research has consistently demonstrated that the PMUY has had a transformative effect on rural households, particularly for women.

Key Benefits of PMUY

Home health improvement

By transitioning families away from solid fuels like wood, dung, and crop residues, PMUY has significantly lowered indoor air pollution. This has enhanced the respiratory health of women and children, who are more exposed to smoke from traditional cooking methods.

Reduced labor and saved time

Women in rural and remote areas typically spend hours collecting wood and preparing traditional fuels. Access to LPG has alleviated this burden, allowing more time for education, income-generating activities, and other productive pursuits. Cutting down on reliance on fuelwood and biomass helps reduce deforestation and environmental degradation. The shift to clean energy not only benefits households but also promotes broader ecological sustainability.
