Dhan Mandi Bhav: Competition has intensified in the global rice market, and this is directly impacting major exporting countries like Thailand. The latest report from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service indicates that Thailand’s rice exports declined to 7.5 million tons in 2024-25, a decline of approximately 24 per cent compared to 9.9 million tons in the previous year. This decline is a result of increased competition in the international market, with India’s resurgence and Vietnam’s aggressive supply being key factors.

Increasing Competition in the Global Market

White rice has been a strong export segment for Thailand for many years, but has seen a significant decline in recent months. India’s resumption of exports increased global supply, while Vietnam gained traction with highly competitive pricing and consistent availability. The decline in white rice shipments in the first six months clearly illustrates this challenge.

Premium Varieties Provide Partial Relief

Although demand for white rice has declined, premium parboiled and aromatic varieties have performed relatively well. Stable demand for these varieties from the Middle East, African, and Asian countries has provided some relief to Thai traders. Large orders from China and Singapore have kept Thai rice prices high and boosted the morale of local millers and farmers.

Sluggishness May Continue

According to the FAS, Thailand’s rice exports are expected to remain stable at around 7.5 million tons in 2025-26. This indicates that Thailand is currently struggling to return to its previous level of 10 million tons. Although the government and traders are actively exploring new markets, experts believe that a quick improvement is unlikely due to the strong presence of competing countries.
