Amidst rising inflation and increasing land prices in India, the dream of owning a home is becoming increasingly difficult for the common man. In this context, the central and state governments are jointly implementing several schemes to provide housing to the poor and needy. One of these schemes is the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), or PMAY-G, which was launched with the aim of providing a permanent and safe home to every rural poor in the country.

Objective and Benefits of the Scheme

The objective of PMAY-G is to ensure that every citizen of the country, especially the poor living in rural areas, can build a house in their own name without any middlemen. Under this scheme, the central government transfers the assistance amount directly to the beneficiary’s Aadhaar-linked bank account. This not only maintains transparency but also curbs corruption.

To date, more than 25 million houses have been built under this scheme, and the target is to provide “housing for every family” by 2027.

Who can avail of the scheme?

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) benefits families who do not own a permanent home. Those living in kutcha, dilapidated, or temporary houses are eligible. Priority is given to SC/ST, minority communities, persons with disabilities, female-headed households, individuals freed from bonded labor, and tribal families.

Based on economic class, the annual income limit for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) is up to ₹3 lakh, and for LIG (Low Income Group) it ranges from ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh.

Amount and Assistance

The central government provides financial assistance of up to ₹1.20 lakh in general areas and up to ₹1.30 lakh in difficult or hilly areas. State governments also make additional contributions. The entire amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). The construction process is monitored using GIS tools to ensure quality.

Application Process: Both Online and Offline Options

The application process for this scheme is very simple. Interested applicants can apply online by visiting the official website of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) at pmayg.nic.in. Verification through Aadhaar card and mobile number is required during registration.
