Free LPG Connection: The government of India provides free cooking gas (Free LPG Connection) to crores of households and families under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). To all the beneficiaries, the government provides subsidized LPG cooking gas cylinders (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).
The government has not been providing new gas connections under PMUY all along while beneficiaries received refills on their cylinders. The PMUY has recently said that new gas connections will once again be available.
Who will get a completely free cooking gas connection? Where do you sign up? Which areas are being highlighted in this announcement? Here are the details.
Free LPG Connections Under Ujjwala Yojana in Delhi
The Ujjwala Yojana scheme is available across India. Women from any state can get a free cooking gas connection under this scheme. Now, because air pollution is rising in Delhi, the government will give free LPG connections again. Delhi’s air quality is very poor, which is harmful to people’s health.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will provide completely free gas connections through Ujjwala Yojana. This plan is mainly for families who do not use LPG yet and for families in slum areas. Using this scheme will reduce wood and coal stoves. Less smoke will go into the air, and Delhi’s pollution will improve.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: Aid for Poor Families
The Ujjwala Yojana is a scheme launched in 2016 aimed at helping poor women. The scheme gives them their own, free, gas cylinder, regulator, and stove. The Delhi government now wants to extend this scheme to all slum areas. Officials will be going and surveying all those families who are still cooking with wood or coal and they will have a list of eligible families that would receive an LPG gas cylinder connection for free. This plan would not only protect the environment but, it would also increase the quality of life for these women.
Who will receive the Free Cooking Gas Connection?
All families in the slums located in Delhi that are still using a wood-burning stove, or coal-fired stove, will qualify for the free LPG gas connection scheme. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board will cover each area, and survey families. They will then also have a record of eligible families that can then receive the connections under the Ujjwala Urban Yojana (PMUY). All of it would be free.
The air pollution in Delhi is very high, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached as high as 361 and is unhealthy. The main causes of Delhi’s high air pollution levels include burning of stubble in surrounding states, firecrackers, and vehicle pollution. The PM2.5 levels are also very high.
