Why is KYV necessary?
This process was initiated at the initiative of the National Highways Authority of India. It has been implemented under the National Payments Corporation of India. Under this process, FASTag users must upload clear photographs of their vehicle and a digital copy of their RC to ensure that their vehicle is linked to the FASTag.
According to the government, this process aims to prevent fraud and misuse of the tag. It is often seen that people use the same FASTag for different vehicles and use it fraudulently. KYV is preventing many irregularities.
Get Verified Every Three Years
For information, the government has made it mandatory to conduct KYV every three years to keep NHAI’s data updated. This simply means uploading a photo every three years and waiting for verification. It should be noted that NPCI issued a circular in 2024 stating that re-KYV approval would be required every three years.
Importantly, when issuing a FASTag, the vehicle’s registration number, chassis number, and engine number are verified against the vehicle database. This raises the question: if the information is already approved, why is KYP necessary?
According to NPCI, the primary purpose of implementing this process is to further strengthen the One Vehicle, One Tag scheme and eliminate duplicate or fake FASTags. Failure to comply will result in the deactivation of the FASTag.
