FASTag: The year 2026 brings significant good news for millions of vehicle owners traveling on national highways. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has taken the historic decision to discontinue the “Know Your Vehicle” (KYV) process to eliminate long queues at toll plazas and the hassle of FASTag activation.
With this new rule, which will come into effect on February 1, 2026, car, jeep, and van owners will no longer have to wait for hours for verification when purchasing a new FASTag. This move will not only strengthen Digital India but will also make highway travel more seamless and stress-free.
What is NHAI’s new decision
Previously, after purchasing a new FASTag, the lengthy and complicated KYV (Know Your Vehicle) process had to be followed to fully activate it. Often, due to failed or delayed verification, travelers had to pay double the toll tax. Now, the government has removed this hurdle. After February 1, 2026, the KYV requirement for purchasing a FASTag for a new vehicle will be eliminated.
Banks will now directly match the vehicle’s information with the digital database and, if found correct, will immediately activate it. This entire process will now be the bank’s sole responsibility, eliminating the need for repeated verifications.
How will new FASTag holders benefit
When you purchase a new FASTag for your car, the bank will first cross-check the vehicle’s details with the National Vehicle Database. If your information is valid, the FASTag will be activated immediately. Unlike the old system, there will no longer be the arduous struggle of repeated verifications after activation.
If, for some reason, the vehicle’s data is not available online, the bank will complete the verification solely based on your RC (Registration Certificate). Whether you purchase a FASTag from a bank branch or an online portal, this rule will apply equally everywhere, saving millions of drivers both time and fuel.
What are the rules for existing FASTag users
If you already have a FASTag, there’s some relief for you. Routine KYV verification will no longer be required. Unless a serious complaint is received against your FASTag, there will be no need for a physical inspection or recheck.
However, verification may be required only in certain circumstances, such as if your FASTag is being used on another vehicle, if there are complaints of incorrect issuance of the FASTag, or if it is being misused. Previously, everyone had to endure this inconvenience, but now it will only be required in a few suspicious cases.
Keep these things in mind while driving
Even though the KYV process has ended, vehicle owners must exercise extreme caution. Always keep your vehicle registration (RC) and other documents correct and updated, as any errors found during digital verification could delay the issuance of a FASTag. In this era of Digital India, 98% of toll collection is done through FASTags, which helps speed up traffic flow. But remember, always check your FASTag balance before getting on the highway, or you could face a hefty fine—double the toll tax—if you’re blacklisted.
