A new era has started in the world of digital payments. The wait is over – the much-talked-about PIN-free transaction system of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been launched across the country from October 8, 2025. With this new rule introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), digital payments have become easier, faster, and more secure for millions of users. Let’s see how this new system works and how you can use it.

How Does the New PIN-Free System Work?

In this new system, you no longer need a 4- or 6-digit PIN to make payments. Instead, your smartphone uses biometric technology. You can now complete transactions using your fingerprint or facial recognition.

When making a payment, you will see the new biometric option along with the traditional PIN option:

Fingerprint: Touch the specified finger on your phone’s sensor, and the payment will complete instantly.

Facial Recognition: Look at your phone’s front camera, and your face will be scanned to authorize the payment.

This biometric information is linked to your Aadhaar database, making it very secure. Since everyone’s fingerprint and face are unique, the chance of fraud is almost zero.

Daily Transaction Limit and Other Benefits

Currently, you can transact up to ₹5,000 per day using the PIN-free biometric system. This limit is enough for small daily purchases. NPCI may increase this limit in the future based on the system’s success.

You can also set or reset your UPI PIN using Aadhaar-based facial recognition. Earlier, resetting a forgotten UPI PIN required debit card details. Now, you can create a new PIN just by scanning your face, making the process much easier.

Benefits of This Change

The main goal of this change is to make digital payments easier and safer for all people in India. Many, especially senior citizens, find it hard to remember or use PINs. The biometric system removes this problem.

It also stops frauds like PIN theft or people peeping over your shoulder. This new system, launched on October 8, is helping India’s digital economy grow in a safer and smarter way.
