Validity of Driving License in India
In India, a driving licence normally has a validity of 20 years or till the age of 50 years, whichever is earlier. To prevent any hassle, renewing your licence before the date of expiry is always advisable. Even after expiry of the licence, a grace period of one year exists wherein the licence can be renewed. After this time, the licence becomes void for all times and has to be re-applied for.
Renewal Process
Having an expired driving license can result in penalties, fines, and legal issues. As the license is also used as a valid identity proof, having it renewed in advance will prevent inconvenience while driving and obtaining documents. Renewal at the right time provides reassurance and prevents reapplying later.
Step 1: Go to the Official Website
To start the process of renewal, go to the official Parivahan website by entering https://parivahan.gov.in/ in your URL browser. This is the government portal for all vehicle and driving license services in India.
Step 2: Choose Driving License Services
On the home page, under Online Services, click on Driving License Related Services. A new page will be opened where you have to choose your state from the given list. When you choose the state, the page will show you various options. Click on Apply for DL Renewal to continue.
Step 3: Fill Application Details
You shall then be displayed an application page with guidelines. Fill in the mandatory applicant information with care. Depending on the state regulations, you would also be required to upload photo and signature documents. This is not a requirement all over but would be applicable in certain areas.
Step 4: Upload Documents and Pay Fees
Once the details are filled, upload documents if needed. Subsequently, pay the renewal fees by utilizing the online payment facilities available. After ensuring the payment, download the receipt. It is recommended to maintain a printout of the receipt for future use.
Step 5: Confirmation and Receipt
After the process is finalized, your application will be submitted successfully. The downloaded receipt serves as evidence of application until your renewed license is provided. Store it safely for reference in case you are requested for information by the authorities.
