Renewing an expired driving license is now quick and stress-free, thanks to the online system. No need to stand in long queues at RTO offices anymore. You can complete the process from your phone or computer in just a few minutes. Here’s how the entire process works.
Driving License Validity
In India, every vehicle owner must have a valid driving license. The validity period is up to 20 years or until the holder turns 50, whichever comes first. Knowing when to renew helps avoid unnecessary issues. Renewal can be done even a year before the license expires.
Grace Period for Renewal
Even after expiry, the license can still be renewed within a one-year grace period. After this period, the license becomes invalid permanently. In such cases, a fresh application for a new license is required.
Online Renewal Process
To renew online, visit https://parivahan.gov.in. From the homepage, select “Online Services” and then choose “Driving License Services.” After this, select your state name from the list provided.
Steps to Apply
A new page will open with several options. Click on “Apply for DL Renewal.” You will then see instructions for completing the application. Fill in all required applicant details. Some states may ask for photo and signature uploads.
Document Upload and Payment
Upload any required documents if applicable. Pay the necessary fee online and verify the payment status. After completion, download and print the receipt for future reference.
