EPS Pension Hike Demand: Pensioners Urge Govt to Increase to ₹9,000

Letter written to Minister Mansukh Mandaviya

According to media reports,recently the Chennai EPF Pensioners Welfare Association has written a letter to Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. In this letter,there is a demand to increase the minimum monthly pension to Rs 9 thousand with dearness allowance.

80 lakh pensioners

At present,there are about 186 institutions under EPS-95 and about 80 lakh pensioners fall under this category. Commander Ashok Raut,President of EPS-95 National Struggle Committee,said that before the Union Budget,there was a discussion with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about pension increase. However,the Finance Minister did not make any announcement about it in the budget.

Call for a nationwide strike on May 26

Pensioners demonstrated outside the EPFO ​​office in Nashik,Maharashtra. During this,they demanded to increase in the minimum pension from Rs 1 thousand to Rs 9 thousand. Apart from this,various labour organizations in the country have called for a nationwide strike on May 26 demanding the abolition of labour codes and stopping privatization.

Know how the calculation is done

The current formula for calculating pension under the EPS scheme is – (Basic salary X 60 months of service period) / 70.

Pensioners demand that the government should increase the monthly pension keeping in mind their financial condition. It has become difficult to live on a pension of Rs 1 thousand. The nationwide strike on May 26 will put pressure on the government and pensioners are expected to get relief. The government should take some positive steps in this matter soon.
