WhatsApp Ban: Big news for WhatsApp users. In September 2026, WhatsApp banned over 4.5 million accounts in India, according to its most recent monthly compliance report under the Information Technology Rules, 2021. The company stated that 4,540,300 accounts linked to Indian phone numbers were banned between 1 September and 30 September.

A significant portion of these actions occurred before any user complaints were made. WhatsApp reported that 1,293,500 accounts were proactively banned through its own detection mechanisms. The company identifies an Indian account by the presence of a +91 phone number.

Why did WhatsApp ban so many accounts?

WhatsApp explains that it employs systems that detect abuse at various stages of an account’s lifecycle. This includes during registration, messaging activity, and through negative feedback such as user reports and blocks. The company did not provide a detailed breakdown of how many accounts were banned for spam, scams, fraud, abuse, or other violations. It stated that the bans were applied to accounts that breached Indian laws or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.

Nearly 38,000 grievances were filed

During September, WhatsApp received 37,943 grievance reports from users in India. Of these, 695 accounts were acted upon following complaints. The largest category was “Other support” with 19,267 reports, followed by 17,910 ban appeals. WhatsApp took action on 561 accounts under other support and 134 accounts under ban appeals. Account support received 394 reports, product support had 228, and safety complaints totalled 114. No account actions were recorded under these categories in the report.

WhatsApp complied with all GAC orders

During the month, the company received 127 orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee and stated that it complied with all of them. The September figures highlight the scale of automated enforcement on WhatsApp in India. The majority of bans were executed through the platform’s own detection systems rather than direct user complaints, with more than 1.29 million accounts removed proactively before any reports were received.
