VDA Hike: Ahead of Navratri and Diwali, the central government has given a significant gift to millions of laborers across the country. The Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) has been increased for workers in various sectors, including agriculture and construction. This will also increase their minimum wages.

According to reports, the government’s new wage rates will take effect starting October 1, 2026. From that point forward, workers across various categories will enjoy higher minimum wages compared to current levels. This adjustment was made with inflation trends in consideration.

Actually, minimum wages for workers get updated regularly as inflation rises. In this instance, the VDA has been adjusted using the average consumer price index (CPI) calculated as of June 30, 2026. Let’s dive deeper into what this means.

What is variable dearness allowance?

Variable dearness allowance (VDA) represents a portion of the minimum wage given to employees or workers to help offset the impact of inflation. Its goal is to help workers afford their everyday expenses and preserve their living standards even when prices go up.

That said, VDA is just one piece of the minimum wage puzzle. A worker’s total minimum wage comes from combining multiple different components. The central government has raised VDA starting October 1, 2026.

How much has the variable dearness allowance gone up?

Based on report, the Labor Bureau shared that the government made this decision using the average consumer price index, which hit 431.42 by June 30, 2026. This index showed a jump of 6.62 points. Using this information, the minimum wages for various worker categories have been raised accordingly.

The daily minimum wage for unskilled workers in the construction sector has now been increased to Rs 840. Skilled workers, on the other hand, will now receive a minimum wage of Rs 1,111 per day. Unskilled laborers working in Area A in the agricultural sector will now receive a minimum wage of Rs 537 per day. For skilled laborers, this amount has been fixed at Rs 705 per day.

The minimum wage for unskilled labourers in Area B has been increased to Rs 491 per day, while labourers working in Area C will now receive a minimum wage of Rs 486 per day. The proposed restructuring of Tata Sons by Tata Trusts has sparked a new rift within the trusts, with two senior trustees questioning why the decision to reorganize Tata Sons was taken without consulting all trust members.
