IndiGo Fuel Surcharge: If you travel by air, you might be in for a shock, as the cost of air travel is set to rise again. IndiGo, the country’s leading airline, has recalibrated its fuel surcharge in response to rising Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. According to the airline, these charges will apply to both domestic and international routes for all bookings made after 12:01 AM on October 6, 2026.

ATF prices have risen by up to 14%.

IndiGo has noted that ATF prices have been fluctuating over the past few months, with fuel costs also being impacted by geopolitical issues in the Middle East. The company has seen an increase of over 14% in ATF prices, reaching levels not seen in the last decade. Since ATF constitutes a significant portion of an airline’s operating costs, any rise in its price directly impacts the airline’s overall expenses.

What is the impact on passengers?

In addition to the base ticket price, passengers may now have to pay a higher fuel charge. However, according to IndiGo, the fuel charge could have seen an even steeper hike if the entire burden of increased ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) costs were passed on to passengers. The airline clarified that it has only moderately increased the fuel charge this time to minimise the burden on travellers.

The charge increased for the second time this year.

This marks the second time this year that IndiGo has raised fuel charges; the airline previously increased them in April 2026. The latest hike follows another rise in ATF prices, clearly demonstrating the impact of costlier aviation fuel on air travel expenses. However, the total cost of a flight ticket is not determined solely by the fuel charge; various other factors—such as the route, fare type, and booking time—also influence the final price.
